Intention (SMART Goal)

By May 10th as a part of Team 6, I will successfully display strong and weak actor movements by using the Film Blocking Tutorial.

John R. leonetti, Directed some of my most favorite horror films, and his way of using blocking and creative cuts have always amazed me.

Training Source(s)

Films in the end always resort to 2 people having a conversation.

Blocking is made of 3 main components – Space, Shapes, and Lines

Space – space can be used to frame power, closer is more power father is less. You can use space to control the power in a scene and who controls it.

Shapes – Shapes can be used to frame a scene, such as 3 actors forming a triangle each pointing towards the apex of the shot or action.

Lines – Lines can be used to control power too, a standing person has more power than a horizontal person.

In this session I focused mostly on blocking shots to increase fear in our film, along with smooth transitions between, such as the doorway transition shot.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Skills useable from our project are understanding people, and working with a team

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

There were many problems with our film and most (all) were not solved.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

During the project, our team did manage to produce a soundtrack, storyboard, and shot-list.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

During this film I worked with my team helping them with Adobe. And working on making a shot-list using the wonderful technology known as paper! 🙂

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

In future careers (especially mine) you will find people who are not productive or willing to work. This production cycle has helped me understand exactly not what to do when apart of one of said teams lol.

Reactions to the Final Version

N/a no product was made.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

This production is a perfect example of immaturity in our class, often I would ask my team to work on an assignment and usually be blown off, cussed at, or one time had cleaning spray sprayed at me. Now if I was at work and a group did this to me, they would be removed from the program, and a formal complaint would be filed against them. However, seeing as I’m dealing with Immature High-school students who are more worried about a video game or their next romantic pursuit. I decided to just kinda blow it off and do nothing. And as expected we did pretty much nothing during these past weeks. Looking at it now I really should have communicated with my team about working and if that didn’t work just do it for them instead of trying to rely on 1 person.

Another thought I have is why should the Director or another person have to be the person having to push a team to success in this class. I do understand the importance of having figure who carries the team, however this is a film class, and I would rather be learning how to use an awesome camera and make cool shots! Instead of having to try and “heard cats” and just get a piece of paper made, so my team can get a good grade.

Name of scene Research

During our film I have noticed that many scenes could use with with transitioning to another, as such I would like to research Creative Transitions.

CueNotes
How can I use a stationary object to transition a scene?By using a computer and having a camera follow a character perpendicular to it while passing a stationary object as soon as the character leaves the view cut to the character entering in the same fashion from the object.

Andrew Stanton Storytelling

CueNotes
Why should I care?Story telling is joke telling
make me care
caring can shape work
all good stories should give you a promise
Should an audience have to put things together?Make the audience put things together
Unifying Theory of 2+2 don’t give them 4
stories are inevitable but not predictable
How can wonder be used in film?A strong theme always runs through a well told story
wonder is honest
The best stories infuse wonder
Pull information to what is true to you in your film.

Summary – In film apply what you have experienced to make the audience wonder. Make the audience but things together on their own, doing that gives them time to reflect upon their own life in the film and see similarities. Which then leads them to wonder and to care about your film.

Skills Commentary

During this film I used color and blocking to add emotion and character to my film. By using an advanced storyboard and shot list, I was able to create a a film with emotion and character.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

During this film we faced many problems. Most of it was slow production in filming, having to work around this I had to many times work at home editing to meet the final deadline.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

Collaboration was essential during this film, although I did not get to see my team filming much, I did notice in the footage (Because someone forgot to turn off the camera) that they were working together through many problems to finish the film.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

During this film I used Premier Pro and Garage band, along with many musical items to create sounds and add color to the film to create emotion.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

Looking back at this film, I have realized that I should have given my team a more accurate deadline to help them meet their goals. A lot had to be cut from the film sadly, but we did get it done at the end.

Reactions to the Final Version

Reactions were positive, although it was mentioned that the film was not very straight with its story and overall plot.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

Although I enjoyed the final version of the film. I was very unhappy with how it turned out. Due to procrastination in filming I was given only 1 1/2 days to edit our film and make sure my team gets their evidence. As such my editing was heavily rushed.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I have learned that a pre set production timeline is very important to the film as a whole. If one does not exist filming and editing may end up rushed, leaving the film at a bad state that no one likes.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

During this project we decided to get very creative using 2 cameras at once to get multiple angles of the same shot. It turned out very well allowing us to film the movie in one cut in a short amount of time.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

Collaboration was needed heavily during our project due to members being out sick, although it was tough with our hard work we finished our film days ahead of when I expected us to.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

This production was very post filming heavy, with a heavy use of editing, music, and background sound design.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

During filming good communication and a clear plan made the filming come together easily, although there were some tech issues that had to be mitigated

Reactions to the Final Version

Although the production is not what I wanted it to be, reactions were very positive and helpful, many students enjoyed the comedy of film, Josie noted that the story was hard to understand, I plan on making a new film of the same story board.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

During this film I feel that I completed everything that I needed to as a director, even with being gone for a week my team was able to use the storyboards and our pre-production material to finish most of our film.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

I learned that although you give your team mates a task sometimes you need to check in and see if they are actually doing it, a major issue of post production was being off task.
